Four Rivers Leadership Breakfast for Scouting
On June 18th, 2008 Four Rivers had its annual Leadership Breakfast for
Scouting, hosted by the Mayors of Yonkers, Tuckahoe, Eastchester, Bronxville and
Mount Vernon. The Chairman of the Breakfast and also Councilman of Yonkers is
John Murtagh. The breakfast was held at the Riverview in Hastings-on-Hudson.
Some of the people in attendance were the Mayor of Yonkers, Phil Amicone,
firefighters of Local #628, Yonkers Uniformed Fire Officers, Yonkers Police
Captains, Lieutenants and Sergeants, and members of the Four Rivers District
Committee. We were also honored to have Scouts from Pack and Troop 109 come and
do our opening ceremony for us. It was a pleasure to have them come and be part
of this beautiful event.
This fundraiser did turn out to be a success for the District. We were able
to raise about $8,000 with this event. As Julian Jackson, our Scout speaker said
“I don’t know much about raising money, but I know how much fun Scouting is for
me and other kids like me.” With all the support that we received from this
breakfast we are able to continue this for Scouts in the Four Rivers District.

Pack 333 Visits WABC Studio in New York
Submitted by Steven S. (Bear, Pack 333, Yonkers)
On Friday May 23, 2008 the cub scouts of Pack 333 visited WABC studios in New
York City. Arrangements were made in advance to meet with the weather man, since
many of the boys were working on their weather belt loops. Ms. Saundra Thomas,
Vice President of Public Relations, greeted us in the lobby and gave us a tour
of the studio.
Our first stop was the news room. This is a big room where many people work
on the news. We walked in and waited patiently as Lori Stokes prepared for what
is a called a “news tease”, a summary of the day’s top stories. Then we moved
over to the weather station. We met with Jeff Smith, the weatherman. He answered
our questions regarding weather. We found out how weather is predicted, how
rainbows form, tools that are used in weather prediction etc. Then we quietly
waited as Jeff Smith got the signal to do the weather live! It was great to see
the maps behind him change colors as he explained how wonderful the Memorial Day
weekend was going to be. Our next stop was a smaller room where a group of three
people looked at many screens and controlled what news people viewed at home. We
found out that this team is also in charge of what commercials are shown.
Our final stop was the studio where the news-reporters, Lori Stokes and Ken
Rosado report the news. Sometimes the weatherman is in this room as well. We sat
down in front of them with the cameras rolling and heard them report the news.
This part was hard for us because we had to be very quiet. When the news
reporting was over we got to take photos with the news-reporters.
As we left we thanked Ms. Thomas and she gave each of us a water bottle. I
really enjoyed my experience and the opportunity to see how we get our news and
learn about the weather.

Algonquin and Four Rivers District Camporee
Under
a threatening sky, the fun loving Scouts of the Algonquin and Four Rivers
Districts squared off to compete in International Games at the 2008 Camporee
held at 5 Island Park (I still only count 3 islands) in New Rochelle on April
26, 2008. The morning’s games included a Biathlon (bike ride to BB Range and
back), Cabor Toss, Stone Throw, Torch Carry, Drag Race (lash ‘em tight or lose
your guy!), and a non-competitive astronomy station. After the lunch break we
had the honor of hosting an OA Tap Out before the games resumed. The late
afternoon/evening featured the Chef de Cuisine cooking competition, and the
evening schedule included the wildly popular Manhunt!
Our thanks to the dedicated Scouters from the combined Algonquin and Four
Rivers Activities Committee including Charlie DeChamps, Al Tozzi, Anthony
Paterno (who else can get such focus from Scouts demonstrating astronomy during
the DAY!), Bill Langham, Henry Doerr, Andy Maher, Donna Ragusa, Leo Marks, Brian
Webster, Victor Lagama, Tony Blandi, Frank Russo (our Illustrated Man), Dave
D’Lugin, Evan Feldman, and a host of others who stepped up to make it a
memorable day for the boys.
A big OA cheer for Simon & Brad, who came in full Native American regalia for
the Tap Out.
A big atta boy to the brave judges who put their GI tracts on the line to
help with the Chef de Cuisine. Big thanks to Dave D'Lugin, Frank Russo, Fred
Gervat, John Callahan, Roger Stewart, and (Mr. Toque himself!) Bill Langham.
We also thank our professional staff (Tiffany Deygoo, Roger Stewart, Bob
Willett and Dan Conniff) who helped make this event possible.
Yours in Scouting,
Richard Schraudner

Award of Merit was presented by Henry Doerr (Right). John Hradsky a member of

Webelos to Scout Transition
It should be the goal of the Cubmaster and Webelos Leaders to
graduate every Webelos Scout into a Boy Scout troop. The key to
accomplishing this is to begin promoting Boy Scouting when Cub Scouts are
still in their Tiger, Wolf and Bear dens, and to sell the sizzle of the
great outdoors. Scouting should be viewed as an ongoing adventure, and the
progression should be as normal as moving from elementary school to middle
school.
Boy Scout troops should assign an Assistant Scoutmaster or a troop
committee member to be responsible for new Scouts, which would include
developing a relationship with the Cubmaster and the Webelos Leaders. This
person serves as a resource during Webelos overnight activities and builds
enthusiasm among boys and their parents for the exciting challenges that
await them in Boy Scouting.
Conservation Resource Guide
Conservation is a basic part of the BSA mission. Scouting embraces
Leave No Trace, requires conservation-related activities for rank advancement,
and encourages conservation service projects to the community. The new Conservation
Resource Guide identifies Westchester-Putnam agencies engaged in nature and
conservation activities. Organized by District, the Guide is intended to enable
‘one-stop’ access for any Westchester-Putnam Scouts and Scouters seeking
sites for troop conservation projects, nature-related advancements, or outdoor
activities (including William Hornaday Award, Leave No Trace Award, Boy Scout
Rank Advancement Nature Requirements, and Eagle Service Projects).
Opportunities to Volunteer in Four River District
Our district is always looking for people who are willing to assist Scouting
beyond their own pack or troop. If you are interested in helping bring the
values of Scouting to youths outside of your own unit, then please let Tiffany
know. You may become a member of the district committee or commissioner staff.
