Bronxville Troop 5 Embraces All-Season Camping
The Boy Scouts of Bronxville Troop 5 (troop5.wordpress.com) have an
active program of backpacking, canoe camping, and other outdoor opportunities
which they pursue 12 months of the year. In January, a crew of the most senior
Scouts in the Troop traveled to Maine for a 3-day weekend in the snow. They
participated in the Boy Scouts Okpik winter camping training program, where they
learned about winter camping and first aid skills, backpacked with all their
gear into the woods, and made quinzees (snow shelters similar to igloos) which
they slept in. Despite the cold weather (5°F below at night), the boys had a
great time and are planning to return next winter.
In early February, the Troop headed to the Durland Scout Reservation, the
Westchester Putnam Council’s camp in Putnam Valley. The senior Scouts, by now
experienced in winter camping, led the younger Scouts on a snowshoe trek into
the woods where they camped overnight in quinzees and tents. When the Scouts
weren’t setting up shelters, preparing and eating their meals, or snowshoeing,
they enjoyed sledding down one of the hills near the campsite, having snowball
fights, and debating the merits of Man versus Wild and Survivorman.
According to Scoutmaster Brennan Carley, winter camping is an ideal
opportunity for the boys to learn new skills, develop as leaders, and gain the
self-confidence (and bragging rights) that come from building your own shelter
in the woods and sleeping in it, even in challenging conditions. According to
the Scouts, it was a great time, and much better than spending the weekend
inside watching TV.

Webelos to Scout Transition
It should be the goal of the Cubmaster and Webelos Leaders to
graduate every Webelos Scout into a Boy Scout troop. The key to
accomplishing this is to begin promoting Boy Scouting when Cub Scouts are
still in their Tiger, Wolf and Bear dens, and to sell the sizzle of the
great outdoors. Scouting should be viewed as an ongoing adventure, and the
progression should be as normal as moving from elementary school to middle
school.
Boy Scout troops should assign an Assistant Scoutmaster or a troop
committee member to be responsible for new Scouts, which would include
developing a relationship with the Cubmaster and the Webelos Leaders. This
person serves as a resource during Webelos overnight activities and builds
enthusiasm among boys and their parents for the exciting challenges that
await them in Boy Scouting.
Conservation Resource Guide
Conservation is a basic part of the BSA mission. Scouting embraces
Leave No Trace, requires conservation-related activities for rank advancement,
and encourages conservation service projects to the community. The new Conservation
Resource Guide identifies Westchester-Putnam agencies engaged in nature and
conservation activities. Organized by District, the Guide is intended to enable
‘one-stop’ access for any Westchester-Putnam Scouts and Scouters seeking
sites for troop conservation projects, nature-related advancements, or outdoor
activities (including William Hornaday Award, Leave No Trace Award, Boy Scout
Rank Advancement Nature Requirements, and Eagle Service Projects).
Opportunities to Volunteer in Four River District
Our district is always looking for people who are willing to assist Scouting
beyond their own pack or troop. If you are interested in helping bring the
values of Scouting to youths outside of your own unit, then please let Tiffany
know. You may become a member of the district committee or commissioner staff.
